Of the most vivid memories of Ramadan from childhood is the whole khandan [family, extended family] piling into Ammi’s 1995 White Dodge Caravan for Isha Prayer and Taraweeh with my two brothers, Ammi, Abbu, and two Mamoos [maternal uncles] after downing yummy iftaari (meal to break the fast). Of course, in the beginning, there were the amazing Qaris (Quran reciters)from overseas, ours being my late Quran Teacher and amazing reciter, Hafidh Obaid ur Rahman [may Allah have mercy on him]. As years went by and local madrasahs (Quran academies) began emerging, we were blessed with young qaris who Allah had given the honor of preserving the Quran in their hearts. What amazes Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide of these young preservers of the Quran is that they’re American. I know because my cousin went to one of these local academies, and our relatives overseas were shocked that after living in “Amreeka”, our communities were able to give birth to, what I call, Young Qari Superstars. After completing hifdh (memorizing the Quran), most of these kids go on to excel academically and succeed in their professional lives as well
